Xian Xinghai, a great Chinese composer, was born into a poor family in Macao in 1905.
When he was young, he showed great musical talent. In 1928 Xian entered Shanghai National Music Conservatory to study violin and piano. In 1931 he was admitted to the Paris Conservatory. During this period he composed many excellent works. Xian returned to China in 1935. During the Sino-Japanese War he wrote works to encourage Chinese people to fight, including the famous song Yellow River Cantata. Unfortunately, he died from an illness in Moscow in 1945.
Xian Xinghai’s contributions to Chinese music won him the title “People’s Composer”.
