The First Period

Teaching Aims:

1.Learn and master useful new words and expressions appeared in this period. 2.Train the students’ listening and speaking abilities.

3.Talk about science and scientific achievement and encourage students to work hard at their lessons.

Teaching Important Points:

1.Complete the listening and speaking to train the students’ abilities. 2.Practice expressing intentions and wishes. Teaching Difficult Points:

1.How to help students talk in English about science and scientific achievements and able to express oneself readily and effortlessly. 2.How to improve the students’ listening ability. Teaching Methods:

Question: What has changed the world? (Scientific achievement)

As we all see now, with the development of science and technology, the world is changing day by day. Today, we are going to learn Unit 11 Scientific achievement. First, Let’s learn some new words and useful expressions as usual.

Now, who can tell us what scientific achievements you think have changed the world? S:(for example: electricity; cars; aeroplane; radio; the Internet; solar energy„)

I think some other ones like genetic engineering and cloning are also changing the world.

Q: which one do you think is the most important? Why?

(Answer: I think solar energy is the most important, because it helps us save lots of natural sources of energy like coals, natural gas and soil etc.)

What are some other scientific achievements that you think are important?

(Answer: the invention of steam engine/ computer/telephone etc.) Do these achievements have anything in common? If so, what?

(Answer: They are all important and useful for the development of mankind and society.)

Step 5 Listening

The listening material contains two parts.

Task 1. please look at the chart in exercise 1 at the top of page 2 as quickly as possible. (Then play the first part of the tape for your only twice to complete it. After that, check the answer with whole class.)

Task 2. Listen to Part 2 and finish the sentences this period. Then check answer as the last step.

Step 6 Speaking

Put the class in groups of five to have a discussion as request. Four group represent scientists; one member will listen to all the scientists and ask questions. At the end of the discussion, the student must decide who will get the money and why.

When you introduce your project and explain why it is the most important, you may use the useful expressions at the top of page 3.

Some useful expressions:

Step 7 Summary and Home work

In this period, we have mainly talked about scientific achievement. We also have learnt some new words and expressions and some useful expressions to express intentions and wishes. After class, please review these new words and expressions and preview the reading part.

The Second Period

Teaching Aims:

1.Review and master new words appeared in the reading material. 2.Train the students’ reading ability. 3.Learn about Zhongguancun Teaching Important Points:

1.Learn to use the following phrases and sentence patterns: In store; set foot in(on); rely on; come to life; put forward It is likely that„; make „clear„ 2.Improve the students’ reading ability. Teaching Difficult Points:

How to help the students understand the reading clearly. Teaching Methods:

1.Pre-reading to make the students interested in what they will read. 2.Fast reading to get a general idea of the text. 3.Careful reading to get the detailed information.

4.Single, pair and group work to make every student can understand the reading material exactly and play an important role in class. Teaching Aids:

Do the exercise on page 5 to review the new words learnt during the last period. (five minutes later, check the answer with the whole class.)

It is well-known to everyone that science and technology in our country is rapidly developing. And it is also well-known that there is a new center for Chinese science and technology in Beijing. Do you know what the name of center is? (Zhongguancun )

Today, we are going to learn the text about Zhongguancun. Step 3 Reading

Now, please turn your books to page 3. Read the text as quickly as possible in five

minutes and find out the answers to the following question. 1)What kind of spirit has made Zhongguancun a success? 2)What are the two mottos mentioned in the text for the park?

(Answer to the questions: 1. It is the spirit of creativity and scientific skill that has made3 Zhongguancun a success. 2. “Relying on science, technology, and knowledge to increase economic power” and “Encouraging pioneering work and accepting failure.”)

After these, read the passage carefully again. Pay attention to some detailed information and useful expressions. Then work in groups to complete the first exercise in Post-reading.

The Third Period

In the last two periods, we discussed the science achievements and read the passage Zhongguancun and learned some useful phrases and sentence patterns. Now, Let’s do an exercise on page 82. (Then check the answers) Step 3 Word Formation

Now, Let’s study word formation. First, look at the words on page 6. give two minutes to let students find out the ways of forming a word.

1.some of words are formed with prefixes in front of the stems. 2.Some of words are formed with suffixes at the end of the strems.

3.mankind and broadband are compounds, hi-tech and e-mail are short forms; IT and CSA are also short forms.

Look at the blackboard and guess the meaning of these affixes. Trans- carry -graph see tele- below super- life

1. In this period, we’ve learnt the Word Formation and know some meaning of the affixes in the different words. And we also review the useful new words and expressions at the beginning. Don’t forget preview the next part after class.
