The Time I Felt Most Proud of Myself in English
Last year in fourth grade, we had to do a big project for English class. Ms. Johnson, our English teacher, told us we would be writing and illustrating our very own children's books! I was so excited when she told us. I love reading storybooks and looking at all the bright, colorful pictures. Getting to make my own book seemed like it would be a ton of fun.
First, Ms. Johnson had us spend a few weeks coming up with ideas for our stories. She said they could be about anything we wanted, but they had to be original and couldn't just re-tell a story we had read before. I thought really hard about what kind of story I wanted to write. I considered writing about things like animals, sports, or even alien adventures in outer space!
Finally, I decided I wanted to write a story about a young girl who really loved art and drawing. I've always loved art class and doodling little pictures. My story would be about how this girl used her artistic talent to overcome a problem and help someone out. Once I had the main idea worked out, I started mapping out more of the details - who the characters would be,
what the problem was that the main character would face, how she would use her art to solve it, and so on.
After we had spent a few weeks planning, it was time to start actually writing our stories. Ms. Johnson gave us some time in class to work on them each day. I found it pretty difficult at first to get all my ideas down on paper in a way that flowed smoothly and made sense. I spent a lot of time rereading what I had written and revising parts that didn't sound quite right. Whenever I got stuck, I would re-read the prompt from Ms. Johnson about what we needed to include.
Slowly but surely, my story about the artistic young girl started taking shape. I worked really hard on describing the characters and the settings in a lot of detail, using lots of descriptive adjectives I had learned. I wanted my story to be full of imagination and for the reader to be able to picture everything vividly in their mind. I also spent time varying my sentence structure, since Ms. Johnson was always reminding us not to have too many short, choppy sentences in a row.
After we finished writing our story drafts, the next step was to make illustrations to go along with the book. I was really looking forward to this part! I sketched out thumbnail drawings for what I wanted each page to look like. Then I started working
on the final illustrations, using colored pencils, markers, crayons, and even some decorations like dried flowers and glitter. Looking back, some of my drawings were pretty messy and not the greatest artistic masterpieces. But I didn't care - I was proud of them because I had worked hard on each one.
Finally, after weeks of hard work, it was time to put our books together and get them bound. I carefully arranged my pages in the right order, both the illustrated sides and the sides with the text. It was amazing to see my creation finally start to look like a real book! Ms. Johnson collected them all and had them sent away to get bound with a hard cover and binding. I could barely sleep that night, I was so excited and proud of myself for completing such a big project.
When Ms. Johnson handed the finished books back to us a week later, I was stunned by how professional my book looked. It had a glossy cover, with the title I had chosen on the front: \"The Artistic Amber.\" I had never felt so proud of something that I had made before in my life. Flipping through the pages, it seemed hard to believe that every picture and word on those pages had come from my own mind and been created by me.
For our assignment, we had to read our book out loud to the class, which I was a little nervous about. Even though I had
worked so hard on it, what if the other kids thought it was silly or didn't like it? When it was my turn, though, I tried my best to read with lots of enthusiasm and expression, really putting on a performance as I recited my words. To my surprise and delight, the other kids seemed to really enjoy it! They laughed at the funny parts, and several of them told me they thought my book was cool, especially the illustrations.
After I finished, Ms. Johnson called me to the front of the class. I figured I was probably in trouble for something. But instead, she told me how proud she was of all the effort I had put into my book. She pointed out things she really liked, like the creativity of the story and all the vivid descriptions that \"made the story come alive.\" Then she did something I never expected - she gave me a shiny gold star sticker and put it on the front of my book! She said it was for doing such an amazing job on the project and being such a talented writer and illustrator. I couldn't stop smiling all day.
Getting that gold star sticker from Ms. Johnson made me feel prouder than I had ever felt before in my life up until that point. I had put so much of my time, energy, and effort into that book, and it paid off. Even though it was \"just\" an assignment for school, I treated it like it was one of the most important things in
the world at the time. Having my hard work recognized like that meant everything to me.
Working on that book and receiving such high praise from my teacher showed me that when I try my absolute best on something and don't give up, even if it's difficult, I can create something amazing that I can be truly proud of. It's a lesson that has stuck with me and one that I try to remember whenever I have a big project or challenge - if I keep my chin up and do the hard work, I can make something wonderful.
That little gold star may have been a small gesture, but it meant the world to a fourth grader like me at the time.
Whenever I read through my old book or see that star sticker, it brings back that feeling of pride and accomplishment. It reminds me that I'm capable of great things, no matter how old I am, as long as I believe in myself. Ms. Johnson's recognition made me feel like a real writer and artist. Maybe someday I'll become an actual author and illustrator when I grow up - thanks to that special project, I know I have the tools and talent to make it happen.
