第三部分 阅读理解(共20小题;每小题2分,满分40分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。
A
On Thursday September 6, 2007, the world lost an amazing musician and person. The great tenor Luciano Pavarotti lost the battle with cancer and died at 5 am in Italy. This great loss cannot go unnoticed and shouldn’t. Pavarotti was an incredible individual and he tried and succeeded in making a difference in the world. Instead of looking at his death with sorrow, we should look at his death as an inspiration.
Reviewing all of the contributions this man made with his life, we should try to contribute something great to the world we live in. Each person has a talent, and some, like Pavarotti, use their talents to create a better place for everyone. Many times, some young people feel as though they are lost, asking the same questions and getting no answers: What is my purpose in life? What am I meant to do? Of course we should take time to respectfully think about Pavarotti, but we shouldn’t dwell on sorrow because his death is something we can’t change. What we all can do to honor this great man is to commit to making a difference and contributing something to the world.
Even though not everyone is a musician, each person can learn something from Pavarotti’s life. The first lesson is that you do not have to become what you originally planned to be. Pavarotti was one of the greatest tenors of all time, but he did not start that way. Many people feel they are stuck on the path they’ve chosen. This is not the case! Pavarotti taught elementary school for two years and was an insurance salesman while pursuing his interest. For six years, Pavarotti sang for nothing more than just a hobby until he won an international prize. Just four years later he made his American debut (首次演出) in Miami and three years later in New York. He made 379 performances and retired from stage opera in 2004, but continued to tour until his cancer diagnosis in 2006. …
56. What does the author mean by saying “we should look at his death as an inspiration”? A. We should be inspired by his death.
B. We should be inspired to win the battle with cancer.
C. We should be inspired to devote ourselves to becoming a musician. D. We should be inspired to make contributions to the world. 57. The underlined phrase “dwell on” probably means “________”. A. talk little about B. think a lot about C. fix one’s attention on D. look carefully at
58. In the second paragraph, the author mainly intends to tell readers about ______. A. reviewing all of Pavarotti’s contributions B. the purpose in one’s life C. many young people’s doubts D. how to use talents
59. What will the writer probably talk about in the 4th paragraph? A. To describe the excellence of his performances. B. To inform readers of his cancer diagnosis.
C. To tell readers other lessons we can learn from Pavarotti. D. To introduce his successful life as a tenor.
60. In which section of a newspaper does the passage appear? A. Entertainment. B. Cover News. C. Medicine. D. Literature. B
When your parents advise you to “get an education” in order to raise your income, they tell you only half the truth. What they really mean is to get just enough education to provide manpower for your society, but not so much that you prove an embarrassment to your society. Get a high school diploma, at least. Without that, you will be occupationally dead unless your name happens to be George Bernard Shaw or Thomas Edison, and you can successfully drop out in grade school.
Get a college degree, if possible. With a BA (学士学位), you are on a good start. But now you have to start to put on the brakes. If you go for a master’s degree (硕士学位), make sure it is an MBA, which is more likely to take effect.
Do you know, for instance, that long-distance truck drivers earn more per year than full professors? Yes, the average salary last years for those truckers was $44,000 while the full professors managed to earn just $43,030.
A doctor’s degree (博士学位) is a higher degree you can get. You’d better choose a few specialized fields such as physics or chemistry where the degree can quickly be turned to industrial or commercial purposes. If you become a doctor of history or political science or languages, or worst of all, in philosophy, you run the risk of becoming overeducated for our national demands. Not for our needs, but for our demands. 61. What is the main idea of the first paragraph? A. You should get enough education for society. B. Getting an education means raising your income. C. How to provide manpower for society. D. Your parents tell you a lie about the income. 62. What is education in the writer’s opinion? A. Something embarrassing and unnecessary. B. Something that is not as important as jobs. C. A means to provide manpower for the country. D. Something that can help people get better paid. 63. What’s the purpose in writing this passage? A. To show readers which jobs are better.
B. To tell readers meeting society’s demands is very important. C. To look down upon doctors and professors. D. To advise people not to get a doctor’s degree. C
Police fired tear gas and arrested more than 5,000 protestors (示威者) Friday in an attempt to break up the largest anti-nuclear demonstration () in the United States. More than 135,000 demonstrators bravely faced police on the construction site of a nuclear power plant scheduled to provide power to most of southern New Hampshire. Organizers of the huge demonstration said, the protest was continuing despite the police actions. More demonstrators were arriving to keep up the pressure on state authorities to cancel the project. The demonstrators had charged that the project was unsafe in the populated area, and would create pollution in the seaside. They added that the demonstrations would go on until the
prisons and the courts were so overloaded that the state judicial system (司法系统) would break down.
Governor Stanforth Thumper declared that there would be no reconsideration of the power project and no delay in its construction set for completion in three years. “This project will begin on time and the people of this state will begin to receive its benefits on schedule. Those who break the law in misguided attempts will be dealt with according to the law,” he said. And more police were called from all over the state to handle the demonstration.
The protest began before dawn Friday when several thousand demonstrators broke through police lines around the construction site. They carried cards and signs that read “Sun Power, Not Nuclear Power” and “Stop Private Profits from Public Dangers”. They ignored the police order to move from the area. Tear gas fired by police failed to drive away the protestors who were prepared with their own gas masks or facecloths. Finally gas-masked and armed police charged into the crowd to drag off the demonstrators one by one. The protestors did not fight against police, but refused to walk away under their own power. Those arrested would be charged with unlawful assembly, and disturbing the peace. . Why did the protestors organize this demonstration? A. Because they called for private profits. B. Because they didn’t want sun power.
C. Because they wanted to stop the construction of a nuclear power plant. D. Because the police fired tear gas and many protestors were arrested. 65. With whom would the prisons and courts be overloaded?
A. Demonstrators. B. Arrested protestors. C. Prisoners. D. Criminals. 66. Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage? A. This was the largest-ever demonstration in America.
B. The nuclear power plant was intended to offer power to local citizens. C. The construction of the power plant would continue. D. Police as well as some protestors had gas-masks. 67. What is the author’s tone in this report?
A. Subjective. B. Shocked. C. Prejudiced. D. Objective. 68. What is probably the best title of this passage? A. Protestors arrested in demonstration. B. Governor declared no delay in the project. C. More police joined to handle the demonstration. D. Those arrested would be charged. D
When 17-year-old Anna Kinderman takes a turn too fast in her parents’ sedan (轿车) or jams the brakes too hard, she apologizes aloud even when no one else is in the car. “Sorry, Dad,” she says, looking up at the camera mounted (安装在) on the rear-view mirror.
Several US auto insurers have begun offering in-car cameras or global positioning equipment to help parents monitor their teenagers’ driving behavior, hoping to reduce the alarming number of crashes.
Industry experts say that it’s too soon to gauge (评估) the effectiveness of programs like American Family Insurance Co.’s Teen Safe Driver, used by the Kindermans. But the case for needing to improve highway safety for teens is compelling.
Insurance companies can benefit significantly if the initiatives catch on. “It’s a unique opportunity for them to help change behavior, which will help them drive down rates and make customers happy,” said Craig Weber, senior insurance analyst. Even if rates don’t drop, he added, “it’s a huge win in building customer loyalty and generating positive public relations.”
Under Teen Safe Driver, a camera records audio and video images of both the road and the driver when motion sensors detect swerving (转向), hard braking, sudden acceleration or a collision. The footage goes to an analysis center where it is graded for riskiness and sent on to parents with comments and coaching tips.
Teen drivers have mixed feelings about the technology; some even cover the camera after it is first installed.
“It’s great that you can see what you did wrong,” said Anna. “But it feels like a parent is in your space, especially when you get yelled at it if you do something wrong.”
She usually sits down with her father, a police officer, to review the incidents — and explain why she was driving with a cellphone to her ear.
Her mom, Bette Kinderman, views the system as a great tool for parents. 69. What is the function of the camera mounted on the rear-view mirror? A. To ensure the driver’s safety. B. To remind the driver to be careful. C. To record how the driver runs his car. D. To take photos of the driver.
70. Installing a camera on the rear-view mirror ______. A. has reduced the number of traffic accidents B. is effective in guarding a driver’s highway safety
C. is proposed by parents who concern about their kids’ road safety D. is unknown in improving highway safety
71. Why do teen drivers have mixed feelings about the technology? A. Because they may feel uneasy when driving under monitoring. B. Because they don’t like to have their parents accompany them. C. Because they believe they can be careful in driving.
D. Because they feel that the camera will distract their attention. 72. What attitude do teen drivers’ parents hold towards the system? A. They think it’s unfair to their children.
B. They think it’s a try in improving highway safety.
C. They think it’s a great tool to instruct their children’s driving. D. They think it can ensure teen drivers’ highway safety. E
Milan’s public transportation system is efficient. There are four underground lines, with a fifth being considered, as well as buses and trams. Tickets are available at Metropolitana Milanesa (MM) stations and some newspaper stands.
Don’t bother trying to call taxis, as they generally won’t stop. Driving through central Milan is a struggle. One-way streets seem to keep cars out. You’ll need to pay to park (if you can find a space) and the limit is two hours during the day. Illegally parked cars will be fined or towed. A better plan is to leave your car at an outlying MM station.
Bus
ATM operates an efficient bus system working in tandem (并行) with the underground rail. Tickets are valid for up to 75-minute-travel on buses and trams and can be bought at underground stations, tobacconists and newspaper stands. Free public transport maps are available from ATM’s Info Point in the Duomo underground station. Car
Entering central Milan by car is a major struggle. Street parking is limited. To pay, buy a SostaMilano card from a tobacconist, scratch off the date and the hour, and display it on your dashboard. Motoring information is provided by the Automobile Club Italia. If you’re looking to rent, many companies have offices at Stazione Centrale. Taxi
Save yourself the indignity of trying to call taxis — they don’t stop. Head for a taxi rank. Bicycle
You can hire a bicycle for a few euros a day if you feel like braving the traffic. Underground rail
Milan’s underground rail system is very efficient. A ticket is valid for one underground ride. 73. Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage? A. Trying to have a taxi in the street seldom works. B. There are five underground lines in Milan. C. You’d better not drive through Milan.
D. You can buy bus or underground tickets easily.
74. What does the underlined word “braving” probably mean? A. Feeling afraid of.
B. Dealing with something difficult or unpleasant. C. Enjoying or appreciating. D. Trying to improve.
75. This passage is mainly about _______. A. going to Milan B. living in Milan
C. getting around in Milan D. the population of Milan

W: Look! The room is full of smoke. I can hardly breathe. M: I agree. Smoking should not be permitted here in this room. W: That’s right. Nowadays, people who smoke seldom think of others. Text 2
M: How are you going to spend your holiday? W: I can’t decide what to do.
M: How about going to the mountains? W: I prefer not to. Text 3
M: Good morning, Jane. You are early. What’s up?
W: Morning, Steve. I’ve got two important meetings today, one with the boss and one with a customer. You’re pretty early yourself, something important?
M: Yeah, I am meeting a customer, too. Someone from a big computer company, I think their head office is in Taiwan, but this guy runs the New York office. W: Wang Computers. That’s my customer, too. Text 4
W: David said he bought a new car with five thousand dollars. M: What kind is it?
W: A BMW. I’m not sure what model.
M: Are you sure? A BMW for five thousand? Sounds pretty cheap to me! Text 5
W: Where did you go just now?
M: Well, I went to the shops and bought two dozen eggs and two pounds of chicken. W: How much did they cost you in all? M: Twenty yuan. Text 6
W: Hello, Cathy speaking.
M: Hello, Cathy. This is John here. Why aren’t you here at the meeting? W: Oh, oh, I am terribly sorry, but I am not feeling very well.
M: Is that all? We thought you might have had an accident or forgotten the day or something. W: No, I am sorry. I was sick all night. I think it must have been the fish I ate last night. M: Well, I think you should have at least phoned Kate and told her you weren’t coming to the meeting.
W: Yes, I suppose I should have done so. I’m sorry about that. Anyway, I think I will be able to get to work tomorrow.
M: OK. Take care and don’t eat any more fish. W: Yeah, I won’t. Thanks for calling. M: You’re welcome. Text 7
W: Where did you meet Susan?
M: I met her through a computer bulletin board. W: Oh, really, what bulletin board?
M: It was one I used at the local Internet cafe called the E-S life. W: I’ve heard about that, but I’ve never tried it.
M: You ought to. One dollar buys you 15 minutes’ computer time. A “chat session” links you with other people on the network.
W: I have no desire to talk on a network with strangers.
M: That’s the whole point. All your worries disappear because you can’t see the other person. This network allows you to talk to people whom you normally wouldn’t talk to. W: I just want a private conversation with one other person.
M: You can do that. A private chat room lets you talk alone. This online-chat program lets you talk about anything with everyone. Text 8

M: The hours are four to eight, Monday to Friday. We will give you four dollars an hour. Is it OK?
W: That’s fine.
M: Well, will you start tomorrow? W: Sure. Thank you very much. Text 9
M: Hi, Tracy, why didn’t you go to work today and why are you so upset? W: It’s a long story. But in short, my boss told me never to go to work again. M: What’s up?
W: I don’t know. When he told me that, I was very sad and surprised. M: Did you often go to work late?
W: Yes, I often did. But you know I often get up late in the morning. M: Did you work hard?
W: Well, it is hard to say. I think I tried my best. M: Are you good at computers?
W: No. To be honest, I don’t know how to use them at all. M: Have you tried your best to learn? W: No, time always seems so little to me.
M: Now I know the reason. You don’t use your time well and you don’t learn new things. Text 10
This is Ned Weatherbee, your weatherman. This afternoon heavy rain fell in our town. The big storm caused a lot of damage, and traffic came to a complete stop. The storm is now over and the clean-up can begin.
Now let’s look at the weather report for tomorrow and the weekend. Friday will be warm and sunny during the day and cool at night. Temperatures will be in the sixties during the day and in the forties at night. You won’t need a heavy coat, but take a jacket to work.
The weather on Saturday will be nice in the morning and cloudy in the afternoon. It’ll probably rain at night. These showers are quite normal during the spring. So you will have clear weather to do some gardening on Saturday morning. Sunday will be cold and windy, and maybe it will snow in the mountains. If you are planning to go there, don’t forget your boots and jackets. And now for the sports, here is Matthew Delaney. 参

书面表达 (One possible version) Dear editor,
We have been using the new English textbooks for the past two and a half years, and recently we have carried out a survey in our class to find out what students think of them.
Many students are satisfied with them. First, they have beautiful pictures to go with the texts, which attract students. Also, the texts are mostly taken from the latest foreign reading materials and the English is quite standard. What’s more, every module is closely related to society.
At the same time, the students also pointed out some shortcomings. One is that there are too many new words. Secondly, students often find it hard to remember what’s been learned as it is seldom repeated. Worse still, it is difficult to practise the Task or Project part, especially in rural schools.
In my opinion, if for the next edition you chose some interesting reading materials with fewer new words, the students would learn even better. Yours sincerely, Li Hua 重点解析
