One weekend in July, Jane and her husband, Tom, had driven three hours to camp overnight by a lake in the forest. Unfortunately, on the way an unpleasant

1

subject came up and they started to quarrel. By the time they reached the lake, Jane was so angry that she said to Tom, “I'm going to find a better spot for us to camp” and walked away.

With no path to follow, Jane just walked on for quite a long time. After she had climbed to a high place, she turned around, hoping to see the lake. To her surprise, she saw nothing but forest and, far beyond, a snowcapped mountain top. She suddenly realized that she was lost.

“Tom!” she cried. “Help!”

No reply. If only she had not left her mobile phone in that bag with Tom. Jane kept moving, but the farther she walked, the more confused she became. As night was beginning to fall, Jane was so tired that she had to stop for the night. Lying awake in the dark, Jane wanted very much to be with Tom and her family. She wanted to hold him and tell him how much she loved him.

Jane rose at the break of day, hungry and thirsty. She could hear water trickling(滴落) somewhere at a distance. Quickly she followed the sound to a stream. To her great joy, she also saw some berry bushes. She drank and ate a few berries. Never in her life had she tasted anything better. Feeling stronger now, Jane began to walk along the stream and hope it would lead her to the lake.

As she picked her way carefully along the stream, Jane heard a helicopter. Is that for me? Unfortunately, the trees made it impossible for people to see her from

above. A few minutes later, another helicopter flew overhead. Jane took off her yellow blouse, thinking that she should go to an open area and flag them if they came back again.

But no more helicopters came. and it was getting dark again. Jane stopped walking aimless and rested under a tree by the stream. There was only the songs of the insects for company and all the sweet memories came flooding back. Jane could well remember that one summer day she and Tom climbed to the top of a tall tree to rescue a wounded baby bird. Yes! Climb! After trying hard, Jane was on the top of a tall tree. So tired was she that she soon fell asleep on a huge branch of the tree.

It was daybreak when Jane woke up. She looked around, trying to find the lake. Sadly, there were only trees everywhere. She was about to climb down when a red spot at a distance came into her sight with a great noise. A helicopter! Jane waved her yellow blouse! To her great joy, it few in her direction and didn't miss her this time. When it dropped down a rope ladder from which Tom climbed down, Jane burst into tears.

On a bright, warm July afternoon, Mac Hollan, a primary school teacher, was cycling from his home to Alaska with his friends. One of his friends had stopped to make a bicycle repair, but they had encouraged Mac to carry on, and they would catch up with him soon. As Mac pedaled (骑行) along alone, he thought fondly of his wife and two young daughters at home. He hoped to show them this beautiful place someday.

4

Then Mac heard quick and loud breathing behind him. “Man, that's a big dog!” he thought. But when he looked to the side, he saw instantly that it wasn't a dog at all, but a wolf, quickly catching up with him.

Mac's heart jumped. He found out his can of bear spray. With one hand on the bars, he fired the spray at the wolf. A bright red cloud enveloped the animal, and to Mac's relief, it fell back, shaking its head. But a minute later, it was by his side again. Then it attacked the back of Mac's bike, tearing open his tent bag. He fired at the wolf a second time, and again, it fell back only to quickly restart the chase(追赶).

Mac was pedaling hard now. He waved and yelled at passing cars but was careful not to slow down. He saw a steep uphill climb before him. He knew that once he hit the hill, he'd be easy caught up and the wolf's teeth would be tearing into his flesh.

At this moment, Paul and Becky were driving their car on their way to Alaska. They didn't think much of it when they saw two cyclists repairing their bike on the side of the road. A bit later, they spotted what they, too, assumed was a dog running alongside a man on a bike. As they got closer, they realized that the dog was a wolf. Mac heard a large vehicle behind him. He pulled in front of it as the wolf was catching up fast, just a dozen yards away now.

A Vacation with My Mother

I had an interesting childhood: It was filled with surprise and amusements, all because of my mother — loving, sweet, and yet absent-minded and forgetful. One

6

strange family trip we took when I was eleven tells a lot about her.

My two sets of grandparents lived in Colorado and North Dakota, and my parents decided to spend a few weeks driving to those states and seeing all the sights along the way. As the first day of our trip approached, David, my eight-year-old brother, and I unwillingly said good-bye to all of our friends. Who knew if we'd ever see them again? Finally, the moment of our departure arrived, and we loaded suitcases, books, games, camping equipment, and a tent into the car and bravely drove off. We bravely drove off again two hours later after we'd returned home to get the purse and traveler's checks Mom had forgotten.

David and I were always a little nervous when using gas station bathrooms if Mom was driving while Dad slept: “You stand outside the door and play lookout while I go, and I'll stand outside the door and play lookout while you go.” I had terrible pictures in my mind: “Honey, where are the kids?” “What?! Oh, Gosh ... I thought they were being awfully quiet.” We were never actually left behind in a strange city, but we weren't about to take any chances.

On the fourth or fifth night, we had trouble finding a hotel with a vacancy. After driving in vain for some time, Mom suddenly got a great idea: Why didn't we find a house with a likely-looking backyard and ask if we could set up tent there? David and I became nervous. To our great relief, Dad turned down the idea. Mom never could understand our objections. If a strange family showed up on her front doorstep, Mom would have been delighted. She thinks everyone in the world is as nice as she is. We finally found a vacancy in the next town.

阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

I was responding to a call from a small brick flat in a quiet part of town. I assumed I was being sent to pick up some party-goers, or someone who had just had a fight with a lover, or a worker heading to an early shift at some factory for the industrial part of the town.

8

When I arrived at 2:30 a.m., the building was dark except for a single light in a ground floor window. Under such circumstances, many drivers just honk(按喇叭)once or twice, wait a minute, then drive away. But I had seen too many weak people who depended on taxis as their only means of transportation.

Unless a situation smelled of danger, I always went to the door. This passenger might be someone who needs my assistance, I talked to myself. Then I walked to the door and knocked. “Just a minute,” answered a frail, elderly voice. I could hear something being dragged across the floor. After a long pause, the door was opened. A small woman in her 80s stood before me. She was wearing a print dress and a pillbox hat, like somebody out of a 1940s movie. By her side was a small nylon suitcase.

The apartment looked as if no one had lived in it for years. All the furniture was covered with sheets. There were no clocks on the walls, no equipment on the counters. In the corner was a cardboard box filled with photos and glassware.

“Would you carry my bag out to the car?” she said. I took the suitcase to the cab, then returned to assist the woman. She took my arm, and we walked slowly toward the cab.

She kept thanking me for my kindness. “It’s nothing,” I told her. “I just try to treat my passengers the way I would want my mother to be treated.”

Paragraph 1:

Having given me an address, a hospice, she asked. “Could you drive through downtown?” Asked why we didn't take the shortest way, the small woman told me it was the last chance for her to visit the city. We drove through the neighborhood where she and her husband had lived. Besides, she asked me to slow in front of a particular building and sat staring into the darkness, saying nothing. At last, she said she was tired and wanted to go to the hospice.

Paragraph 2:

We drove in silence to the address she had given me, and it was a low building, where the old lady would live the rest of her life. Two nurses who must have been expecting her came out to the cab as soon as we pulled up. I opened the trunk and took the suitcase to the door and the woman was already seated in a wheelchair. When she asked how much she owed me, without thinking, I said nothing and bent to give her a hug. It was my assistance that helped one of the weak people realize her wish.

When I was in seventh grade, I was a candy striper (护士助手)at a local hospital in my town. I volunteered about 30 to 40 hours a week during the summer.

Most of the time I spent there was with Mr. Green. He never has any visitors, and nobody seemed to care about his condition. I spent many days there holding his hand and talking to him, helping with anything that needed to be done. He became a close friend of mine, even though he responded with only an occasional hold of my hand. Mr. Green was in a coma (昏迷).

I left for a week for a vacation with my parents, and when I came back, Mr. Green was gone. I didn’t have the courage to ask any of the nurses where he was, for fear they might tell me he had died. So with many questions unanswered, I continued to volunteer there through my eighth-grade year.

Several years later, when I was a junior in high school, I was at the gas station when I noticed a familiar face. When I realized who it was, my eyes were filled with tears. He was alive! I got up the nerve to ask him if he was Mr. Green, and if he had been in a coma about five years ago. With an uncertain look on his face, he replied yes. I explained how I knew him, and that I had spent many hours talking to him in the hospital. His eyes welled up with tears, and he gave me the warmest hug I had ever received.

He began to tell me how, as he lay there comatose, he could hear me talking to him and could feel me holding his hand the whole time. He thought it was an angel, who was there with him. Mr. Green firmly believed that it was my voice and

touch that had kept him alive. Then he told me about his life. We exchanged a hug, said our good-byes and went our separate ways.

On a cold windy day, a poor boy tried to pay his way through school by selling goods door to door. Wandering on the street, he was not a successful seller. What's worse. he found that he only had one dime(一角硬币)left. His empty stomach reminded him constantly that for days he hadn't eaten anything. He had no choice but to beg for a meal at the next house. Hesitantly he knocked at door, thin king about what to say when it opened. However, he lost his nerve when a lovely young woman opened the door. \"What can I do for you? \"asked the young woman. The boy paused for a while. \"Would you please give me some……a drink of water?\" The boy dare not to look directly into her eyes. She looked at the bony boy and thought he might need something to give him energy so she brought him a glass of milk. His head rising and small hands taking the cup, he drank it up slowly and then asked, \"How much do I owe you? You don’t owe me anything, \"she replied with a warm smile on her face.\" My mother has taught me never to accept pay for a kindness. \"Deeply moved, he said sincerely. \"Then I shall thank you from the

Finally they sent her to a hospital in the big city, where specialists can be called in to cure her rare disease. Among those famous specialists, Dr. Howard Kelly was called in for the consultation. Luckily, after a long struggle, the battle was won. Dr. Kelly requested the business office to pass the final bill to him for approval. He looked at it and then wrote something on the side.

The bill was sent to her room. Hesitantly she took it. She was afraid to open it

Once upon a time, there was a beautiful town and a couple of lovers would often stay on the top of the mountain, enjoying the sunrise and by the sea appreciating the sunset. Everyone who knew them couldn't help envying their happy love.

One day, the man was seriously injured and lying in hospital for many days without any consciousness. The woman guarded him by the bed in daytime, calling his name nonstop at night. She would go to the church and pray to God until her tears ran out.

A month passed by and the man was still sleeping. Finally, God was so moved by her persistence that he would like to do her a special favor.

God said, “I can help your lover recover on the condition that you should promise to be a butterfly for three years. Do you agree with the deal?” She said excitedly and firmly, “Yes, I do! Never will I regret doing that.”

The next day, the woman transformed into a butterfly, flying hurriedly to the hospital. It turned out that the man came to his consciousness and woke up, talking with a doctor. She could not hear what they were talking about because she couldn't fly into the house. What she could do was to watch her beloved through the windows helplessly. Another spring came and the butterfly was in a hurry to fly back to see the man, only to find that there was a pretty lady standing by him. At that moment,

17

she was so shocked that she almost fell down from the sky. She could hardly believe her eyes.

It was said that the man was seriously ill during Christmas and finally they fell in sweet love. The butterfly felt heartbroken. In the following days, she often saw the man take the woman to the top of the mountain to enjoy the sunrise and to the seaside to appreciate the sunset. All these should have belonged to her. But now they belonged to another woman.
