Jean Craighead George was an American writer of more than one hundred books for children and young adults, including Julie of the Wolves, My Side of the Mountain and On the Far Side of the Mountain. Common topics in George’s works are the environment and the natural world. Besides children’s fiction, she wrote at least two guides to cooking with wild foods and one autobiography(自传)published 30 years before her death, Journey Inward.
George was born in 1919, in WashingtonD.C. and raised in a family of naturalists. Her father, mother, brothers, aunts, and uncles were students of nature. On weekends they camped in the woods near their Washington, D.C. home, climbed trees to study birds, gathered eatable plants, and made fish hooks. It helped her interest in nature and animals develop. She centered her life around writing and

nature.
George graduated in 1940 from Pennsylvania State University. In the 1940s she was a reporter for the Washington Post. From 1969 to 1982, she was a writer and editor at Readers Digest. She married John Lothur George in 1944, with whom she wrote her first novel.
Her career in children’s literature(文学)began in 1948 with her first book, Vulpes the Red Fox. Eleven years later came My Side of the Mountain, one of the best loved children’s books ever.It tells the story of Sam Gribley, a boy who escapes the busy life of New York City. He goes to live in the wilderness(荒野)of the Catskill Mountains. Sam makes friends with animals. He hunts and fishes and finds plants to eat. He also steals deer that have been killed by hunters. George said she wrote My Side of the Mountain to tell about all the wonderful adventures she experienced as a child in the woods.George hoped her work would help children enjoy the wilderness and also protect it.
George kept one hundred and seventy-three pets, although not all at once. The animals were always free to stay or go. While they are with the family, however, they become characters in George’s books, articles, and stories. Her own children followed in her footsteps. Her daughter writes books about nature for children. One son is a whale researcher and the other studies birds.
George died from heart disease at the age of 92 in 2012.

Do we organize our thoughts in different ways because of the culture we belong to? If it is so, how can we describe those differences?
The idea of different “cultural thought patterns” was first put forward by an American professor, Robert Kaplan, in the 1960s. He had been looking at the writing style of non-native students at his university in California. He found that the writing styles changed systematically(系统地), according to the cultural origins of the students.
For example, in his opinion, native speakers of English usually went “straight to the point” when

writing an article. However, other students did not. Speakers of Semitic languages (such as Arabic and Hebrew) kept backtracking, and then returned to the point, while speakers of Oriental languages (such as Chinese) were likely to approach the topic only little by little, as if they were moving around it in circles. Speakers of Romance languages (such as French and Spanish) were likely to stay away from the point, making it harder for the (English-speaking) reader to follow. Speakers of Slav languages (such as Russian) often included ideas which didn’t seem to be connected in any way to the development of the article.
This view attracted a lot of attention as soon as it was expressed. People said it was too simple and biased, becauseit was not based on enough evidence at all, and it was just in support of English (which seemed to offer the “most useful” way of presenting the point of view). Russian students, in particular, did not agree with the idea Kaplan had of them!
But Kaplan’s work at least reminded us that, to be able to write well in English (or any language), it is not enough to master structures at sentence level --- we need to work at a higher level of organization, and to understand how rhetorical devices(修辞手法), such as repetition and figurative language, are used.
What’s more, most of us would probably agree that people from different cultural backgrounds do have different ways of presenting ideas, or telling stories, and that, even if these differences are difficult, and perhaps impossible to sort out, just knowing that they exist can help us to understand and appreciate each other much better.
44. Paragraph 2 is written to ________. A. present the disagreement B. introduce Robert Kaplan C.draw readers to the topic

Recently organically grown food has seen a marked increase in popularity. This is likely because Americans have recently been paying a lot more attention to eating well and exercising. Organic food has been marketed as healthier because producers say that they are grown without chemical and pesticides(杀虫剂). To keep up with the growing demand, many supermarkets have been storing organic food. However, is organic food truly better than traditionally grown food?
On the one hand, people in favor of organic food have their reasons to support organic food. Organic food is grown without chemicals or pesticides. What’s more, farmers who grow organic food focus on using renewable resources and reducing pollution. Also, organic food makes one stay healthy. As heart diseases and obesity(肥胖)rise in American society, people are doing much more to fight against this. Healthy campaigns are encouraging eating healthy foods. In this way organic food is connected with the health movement. For most people, “healthy” is linked to “organic”.
However, on the other hand it has been pointed out that organic food is not necessarily healthier than traditionally grown food. Or at least the difference is not as great as the public feels. Many people believe that organic food has increased nutritional benefits as well, such as an increased amount of vitamins, but studies have shown that there is actually no difference between organic food and traditionally grown food. For every study supporting the benefits, there must be another one there voicing the opposite opinion. With the cost of organic food being so high, sometimes costing twice much as traditionally produced food, some people are beginning to rethink going organic.
With all of the different information out there, perhaps it is best to take it with a grain of salt. Organic food lovers present a good point: eating fewer processed foods and going organic can have health benefits. At the very least, they have fewer harmful chemicals present in them. However, a label stating “organic” does not naturally mean healthy. Also, the high cost of organic food often makes any benefits it has less important. Perhaps the key is moderation(适度). Many families choose to only buy certain amounts of organic food, which can be beneficial to health without so much of the financial burden.
48. This passage is most likely to be found in the ________ part of a magazine.
A. LIFE B. PEOPLE C. BUSINESS D. NEWS 49. How many reasons are given that have made people go organic? A. Two.
B. Three.
C. Four.
D. Five.
50. It can be learned from Paragraph 3 that ________. A. organic food costs less than traditionally grown food B. traditionally grown food has more nutritional benefits C. organic food is healthier than traditionally grown food

A. Enjoy everything alone B. Learn to love and be helpful. C. Live a simple but active life D. Get prepared before you adventure E. Adventureis risky but worthwhile
Almost everyone likes traveling. Sometimes we travel with our friends or families, but sometimes we travel alone. Traveling alone can of course cause some inconveniences. Just imagine, you go to a beautiful place but you have to deal with everything yourself. Isn’t it adventurous? But travelling alone can also be exciting and rewarding as well.
52. ________
When you travel alone, the trip is completely yours. You are the star of you own movie. All the mistakes are yours to make, the accidental discoveries to enjoy, the views to admire, and the food to enjoy. The memory of the trip is entirely personal and private.
53. ________
The sense of risk and endless reward is what draws me to traveling alone. Traveling with a friend can be an adventure too, but the adventure quotient(系数)is usually higher when you are alone. You get hurt more easily in the sense that you have to search for company and help. Hey, just because I’m traveling alone doesn’t mean I can’t ask for help. That’s the advantage of traveling alone, isn’t it? Therefore, be open to adventure.
. ________
For me, traveling alone was just one necessary course in making decisions---just keep on rolling the dice(掷骰子)and see what comes up. Stop the research. Stop the analysis. Just keep choosing and living. In travel, everything is as it is, and there’s always another day to change course and choose again. A lot more happens in life when you stop worrying about what to do and just go.
55. ________
