Classic Books Make Great Gifts For Ages 9—12
A good book can capture the imagination while improving our children’s knowledge of the world. Our girls are 9 and nearly 12. 9—12 can be difficult age to select books, as their reading ability goes far beyond their emotional ages. Both of our girls are enthusiastic readers, so we turn to classics. The books found on these reading lists are all personally recommended by at least one of the girls. The Phantom Tollbooth by Norton Juster
This is one of the greatest books that I remember from my childhood. But somehow it gets even better with age. It is a great read for the kids, and an even better read-a-loud. This is the story of Milo, a boy who is disinterested in everything until a tollbooth(过路收费亭) mysteriously appears in his bedroom. He pays his toll and begins his exciting adventure.

The books follow the adventures of four children (not always the same four) as they travel repeatedly to Narnia, where their lives are much different and quite exciting.
Several stories have been adapted for movies. The Magician’s Newphew, the fourth Narnia film, is reported to be released in 2013.

This weekend, I flew across the country to my favorite city Boston. There, I did a few of my favorite things: I had some delicious soup, enjoyed some of the best cakes and spent a few hours at Newbury Comic. Then, in between a storm and a malfunctioning(不正常运转的)subway system I finished my task of helping my little sister move into college.
It’s strange to think that my little sister, who I have come to associate with home, is off somewhere growing up. As we moved boxes and suitcases into her room, I thought about my own memorable afternoon---the broken elevators, my anxious parents and our trip to Target.
As a restless teen, I was anxious for separation. Every year, I left the house of a vacation disguised(掩饰) as an educational experience-----no, no, I’m not talking about college. It was a wonderful thing I knew as freedom; you might recognize it as summer camp. My parents helped me pack, bought me necessities and cried when I said my goodbyes. Then I was off to meet people, find myself and return with a slightly more balanced character. They were excited about the social awareness and newfound appreciation for nature I gained.
During the few short weeks I was off being an independent woman and learned quite
a lot of things. I learned some new songs, camp cheers, etc. I was excited about campfires, boats, three-hour hikes and the best part---being away from home. More important than any of these lessons, however, was the realization that I was off on my own. No matter what I said or thought about leaving home, coming back was always relief---nothing feels as good as a parent’s open arms.
When I first went to college, I was a little terrified. I prepared my self in the same way I prepared for the summer camp. There was tears, goodbyes, freedom and the familiar ache for home. But I also found comfort in letters and phone conversations from parents. And I did learn things, like mechanics and literature. But what was the best part? The best part was when I came home for Thanksgiving and realized that during the few short months I was off being an independent woman, miraculously(奇迹般地) and suddenly, I had somehow become an independent woman.
61. What’s was the writer’s purpose of going to Boston? A. To visit this beautiful city. B. To send her little sister to college. C. To enjoy some delicious food there. D. To find happiness at Newbury Comics.
62. What made the parents happy most when the writer came back from the summer
camp?
A. That she understood better about society and nature. B. That she met different people and made new friends. C. That she had experienced something different. D. That she learned a lot of new things and tricks. 63. What can we learn from the passage?
A. The writer will make a connection between her sister and home. B. The writer and her sister study in the same college.
C. The writer’s sister always as much contact with her parents. D. The writer went to the summer camp with her little sister. . How did the writer feel at the summer camp? A. She felt nervous and terrified.
B. She hoped she would be away from home forever. C. she was excited but missed her home a little. D. she missed the comfort at home so much. 65. From the last paragraph we can infer_____.
A. children make the same preparations for college and the summer camp.
B. college life is an important experience of helping the writer become independent. C. college is a good place where one can experience smiles and tears. D. college is a place where one can learn different subjects.

Astronomers believe they have found the oldest thing they’ve ever seen in the universe. It’s a galaxy far, far away from a time long, long ago.
Hidden in a Hubble Space Telescope photo, a small smudge(污迹) of light was calculated by European astronomers that it is galaxy from about 13.1 billion years ago. That is a time when the universe was very young, just about 600 million years old. That will make it the earliest and most distant galaxy seen so far. “Now the galaxy is so ancient and it probably doesn’t exist in its earlier form and has already merged(融入) into its bigger neighbors,” said Matthew Lehnert of the Paris Observatory, lead author of the study.
“We’re looking at the universe when it was a 20th of its current age,” said the astronomy professor Richard Ellis of California Institute of Technology. “In human terms, we are looking at a 4-year-old boy in the life span of an adult.” While Ellis thinks the result of the study is “pretty good”, there have been other experts claiming that the age of the distant galaxy needs calculating more accurately. But even the doubters praised the study for its importance.
The galaxy doesn’t have a name. Lehnert said he and his colleagues called it “the high red-shift blob.” “Because it takes so long a time for the light to travel such a long distance, the galaxy was very old when we can see it. When it was young, it must have very little carbon or metal that we see in more mature stars and is full of young and blue stars,” Lehnert said.
What interests astronomers most is that this finding fits the theory when the first star and galaxy were born. This galaxy may come into being not too long after them. “we’re looking almost to the edge(边缘) of the universe, almost within 100 million years of the forming of the first object,” Ellis said. “one hundred million years seems an awful long time to a human, but in astronomical time periods, that’s nothing compared to the life of galaxies.
66. We can learn from the passage that ______.
A. the universe came into being about 13.7 billion years ago. B. the newly discovered galaxy is the oldest one in the universe.
C. the galaxy can be seen clearly in the Hubble Space Telescope photo. D. the newly discovered galaxy is believed to be the same as it used to be. 67. According to Paragraph 3 some experts doubt_____. A. the importance of the discovery B. the truth of the discovery C. the actual age of the galaxy D. the size of the galaxy. 68. Which of the following statements is TRUE? A. The lifespan of stars is surprisingly long. B. mature stars are full of carbon and metal.
C. The newly discovered is made up of several galaxies.
D. the theory of the date of birth of the first star proves to be wrong. 69. It can be inferred from the passage that______.
A. the universe is actually very young
B. some older stars and galaxies remain undiscovered.
C. the Paris Observatory is the most authoritative space agency
D. humans have been able to calculate the age of galaxies accurately. 70. What is the best title for this passage? A. the oldest galaxy has been found so far
B. Scientific research goes far into the deep universe. C. How many years has the universe ever existed?

[1] It remains a common belief that most accidents occur in the home. And none occurs
more often than a burn. Whether because of the hot covers of pans or boiling cooking oil, burns are very painful and can cause scars(伤疤).
[2] To prevent burns from becoming scars or to relieve the pain, medical cream should
be applied to the skin. If you don't ______on hand, various burn medicines ought to be usable in your kitchen.
[3] Tomatoes are known for relieving the pain of burns. Just cut a tomato in half, rub it on the affected area for at least 5 to 10 minutes and it will instantly reduce the pain. [4] Another burn medicine that you might have in your cupboard is honey. Honey is an
all-around healer(疗伤物) and it is also effective in preventing burns from becoming scars. Just apply a small amount of honey to the skin and leave it to dry. If, after dying, you could still feel some pain then apply some more honey to it.
[5] Papaya(木瓜) is also good in healing burnt areas. Cut off a part of papaya and attach
it to the affected area. Papaya can effectively remove dry skin cells and speed up the process of cell renewal so healing becomes faster.
[6] Kitchen accidents are very common and it is important that we know some
medicines that will make the pain from these accidents more bearable. All the medicines mentioned above are effective for small injuries. However, if you burn is serious and if it is larger than usual, it would be best to consult a doctor for burn treatment.

That 98% of Antarctica is covered by ice is the knowledge we have known for many years, but will this idea be wrong some day?
New research suggests that the ice in Antarctica is continuing to melt at an alarming rate because of global warming, which causes global sea level’s rise. Many low regions will be flooded by the rising sea. For instance, China’s Shandong Peninsula is said to be divided into two islands.
It is my belief that the ice loss has grown to the point of becoming an international problem needing international cooperation to resolve. Meanwhile, every person should make his own contribution to the protection of the environment. Only in this way can we prevent the ice loss. It’s obvious that tomorrow will be better only if every country does its part to seek solutions to this problem.
