摘要:630,061. Insoles. BRITISH UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CO., Ltd. Dec. 18, 1947,Nos. 33387, 33388. [Convention dates, Dec. 19, 1946], and 333 [Convention date, Jan. 31,1947]. [Classes 17 (i) and 17 (ii)] An insole similar to that described in Specification153,085, [Class 17 (i)], comprises a body layer 4, Fig. 29, and an all-over layer 532 ofstiffened canvas cemented to it under pressure between platens 6, 8, a rib beingformed in the canvas, by progressively tucking the canvas in softened condition into agroove 522 in a matrix 520, Figs. 16, 29 before it is cemented to the body layer 4. Therib may be reinforced by a core piece 536 introduced progressively into the groove withthe canvas. Such core piece may be of rectangular crosssection and may be reinforced bvan L- shaped strip 2 formed integral with the core 536, or one limb of which iscemented to it, the other projecting at right angles and attached to the canvas. Thematrix is of shape of the insole to be produced and about 1/32 inch smaller so that, afterthe combined layers 532, 4 have been trimmed all round, the insole is of the sizerequired. The matrix has parallel opposite faces with a groove 522 in each face extendingfrom one side at the heel breast around the toe to the other side at the heel breast andof shape and size appropriate to the rib to be formed, so that a mating pair of insoles

may be made with the aid of a single matrix. A groove extends around the edge of thematrix at a predetermined uniform distance from the grooves 522 to locate the matrix inposition in the tucking machine, and a tang 526 and pins 528 are provided to hold thecanvas in position thereon while it is being progressively pushed into one of the grooves522 by a tucking tool 120, Figs. 1, 10. This tool is reciprocated by a pitman 136 driven froma horizontal shaft 150 through an eccentric 146. The work is advanced below the tool 120by a four motion feed foot 170 which engages the canvas on the matrix at each side ofthe fold formed therein by the tool 120. An extension 218 on the feed foot enables it tomaintain contact with the work at all times whether the toe of the matrix is pointed ornot, and an extension 220 at the rear of the foot 170 smooths wrinkles which may form inthe canvas near the end of the operation when the core piece is about to be severed. Thecore P, Fig. 10, is fed from a reel 222 on a support 224 through guides 226 to feedmechanism in which is a groove through'which the core passes in a direction parallel totucking tool slide 124. The feed mechanism comprises a toothed wheel 242, Fig. 10, whichengages one side of the core piece and wheel 244 which engages the opposite side, bothwheels being driven at same speed. A lever 268 is moved counter clockwise to operate apawl 256 and advance the core piece while the feed foot 170 is advancing the work, length of core piece feed being preferably slightly greater than distance of work feed. The core is engaged by the feed foot 170 in its downward movement and forced into thefold. A compression spring 278 allows the passage of cores of different or non-uniformthicknesses. Auxiliary feeding means comprising a toothed feed wheel 300 employed ornot at will of operator under control of a treadle is provided to engage the canvas whilethe tucking tool is withdrawn and advance it to prevent wrinkles at sharply curvedportions of the matrix groove. Engagement of a stop or a trigger adjacent to it with theend of the groove in the edge face of the matrix, when the canvas and core piece havebeen tucked into the groove for its full extent, arrests the feed movement of the workand a treadle is then released by the operator to stop the machine. A curved knife 360 ona carrier 362 is automatically operated to sever the core piece in a plane substantially

parallel to the upper face of the matrix. The knife may be operated at any time by meansof a handle located near to operator's hand.
