13、Children with autism(孤独症) have difficulty with social skills and communication. They often act in limited and repeated ways and have what seem like unusual strong interests.

Autism is more often seen in boys than girls. What causes it is not clear. Scientists are studying DNA and possible environmental influences.

Doctors usually cannot confirm a diagnosis(确诊) of autism until a child is about three years old. Rebecca Landa is a researcher at the Kennedy Krieger Institute. Professor Landa wanted to find out what differences in development might be seen earlier. She led a new study that observed 235 babies between 6 and 36 months of age.

“At six months of age, when you lay your baby on their back and you pull them by the arms gently into a seated place, the baby’s head may nod back behind the shoulders, like poor head control. But that does not mean that the baby is going to have autism. It does mean the baby needs to have some exercises to help their body get stronger. And when the babies strengthen their bodies, they are better able to play with toys and also with people, which will help them have better outcomes.”

By the time a baby is one year old, signs of possible autism include difficulty in using words and not looking

eye-to-eye or reaching out to other people. By 14 months, the baby might smile less and use language less. However, Professor Landa says these signs can be very small and their children might be missed during a short health exam.

“It’s important for parents to pay attention to their children’s development, and if they care about a child’s development, they should listen to experts.”

The earlier parents notice delays, she says, the sooner they can begin simple things that may help improve their children’s development. For example, they can talk to the children about what they are doing, give opinions when the children show them something, and play simple games that keep the children’s attention. 1.What’s the best title of the passage? A.How to Confirm a Diagnosis of Autism B.Catching the Early Signs of Autism in Babies C.Ways to Help Children with Autism to Get Better D.Children with Autism with Difficulty in Communication 2.What can we learn from the third paragraph?

A.Landa tried to find differences in babies’ development earlier. B.Landa has found ways to confirm a diagnosis of autism. C.Doctors led a new study to confirm a diagnosis of autism. D.Doctors helped babies with autism develop without difference.

3.When a baby with signs of autism is 14 months old, he or she may ________.

A.nod the head back behind the shoulders B.have difficulty raising his or her head C.dislike to communicate with others D.like reaching out to other people

14、Many people think that the ideas about right and wrong are only personal ideas. Bennett wrote The Book of Virtue (美德) in which he suggested that great moral (道德的) stories can build character. The success of Bennett’s book shows that many Americans still believe in moral values, just like honesty, courage, loyalty and many others.

For Americans, one basic moral value is honesty. The story about George Washington and the cherry tree teaches this value clearly. Little George cut down his father’s favourite cherry tree. When his father asked him about it, George said, “I did it.” Instead of punishment, his father spoke highly of him. Sometimes American honesty--being open and direct--can make people angry. But Americans still believe that “honesty is the best virtue”.

Another virtue is perseverance (毅力). A story tells of a little train climbing a hill. The hill is too high to get over it. But the train just kept pulling, all the while saying, “I think I can, I think I can.” At last, the train was over the top because he did not give up.

Compassion(同情) may be the queen of American virtues. The story of “The Good Samaritan” from the Bible describes a man with compassion. On his way home, he found a poor traveler lying on the road. The kind man, instead of just passing by, stopped to help this person in need.

Compassion can even turn into a good cycle. In 1992, people in Iowa sent plenty of water to help Floridians(佛罗里达 during the Midwest flood, Florida returned. Millions of Americans are quietly 州人) hit by storms. The next summer, passing along the kindness shown to them.

In no way can this book cover all the moral values honored (以…为荣) by Americans. But moral virtues are priceless, and they are the base of American culture and any culture.

C.Americans have many other moral virtues such as courage, loyalty, confidence. D.the story about the little train proves Americans perseverant(有毅力的) 4.Which of the following shows the organization of the passage?

17、On May 2, 2012, Ashok Gadgil became the winner of the $100,000 Lemelson-MIT Award for Global Innovation (全球创新奖). Each year, the honor is given to an inventor who has made a big difference in the lives of people in

developing countries. Gadgil is a professor and physicist at the University of California, Berkeley. He spent thirty years helping people in need. His inventions have helped more than 100 million people around the world. “I chose to focus on problems where my knowledge of science could help,” Gadgil said.

In the 1990s, Gadgil designed his first life-saving invention after more than 10,000 people died from Bengal cholera (孟加拉霍乱) because of the clean water crisis (危机) in India. His invention uses ultraviolet light to kill deadly

disease-carrying germs (细菌) from drinking water. It costs just one cent to clean five liters of water (about 21 cups). So far, the invention has provided safe drinking water for more than five million people in India and other developing countries.

Gadgil’s another important invention is the Berkeley-Darfur Stove (炉具). The long and violent war in Darfur, Sudan, has caused many people to move to foreign countries and live in refugee camps (难民营). They are given food aid. But people still have to travel a long distance five times a week to gather firewood to cook meals. This can be dangerous because of street violence in the area. To avoid danger, some spend much of their money used to feed their families buying firewood.

The stove Gadgil created cuts fuel usage by 55%. That means people wouldn’t have to leave the camps to find firewood as often. The invention also helps to save homes more than $300 a year. About 125,000 people and their families have been helped.

As a professor, Gadgil encourages his students, “Be optimistic (乐观的) when you try a hard problem,” he says. “It’s when you solve a large problem that you can have a big influence on the world.” 1.Ashok Gadgil was given the honor because _______.

A.he was a famous professor and physicist at UC, Berkeley B.he improved the lives of people in developing countries C.he spent thirty years helping people in need D.he developed useful inventions with his team

2.Which of the following statements about Gadgil is TRUE? A.He helped about 125,000 people in India. B.He spent lots of money on his inventions. C.He used his knowledge to help people in need. D.One of his inventions could cure Bengal cholera. 3.What do people benefit from the Berkeley-Darfur Stove? A.They can sell stoves to make a living. B.They can save both time and money. C.They can be protected from diseases. D.They can cook their food easily.

18、I was in line waiting to pay. In line there were two people before me. A little boy was buying some rather strange clothes. He chatted with anyone who was interested in the clothes and soon we learnt that he was going to a kindergarten(幼儿园) party. He had done a great job of putting together interesting costumes.

I noticed that the little boy was paying mostly with change(零钱). It seemed that he had robbed his pig bank(猪形储蓄罐) to do this shopping. However, the cashier told him he was short after counting all the money. The boy thought for a moment and said, “Please keep the shirt and I will come back with more money. “

It was clear that he had already used all the money he had and he was $ 8.00 short. The lady in front of me said, “Well, I could pay half of that. “I told the boy that I could pay the other half. We dug into our handbags. However, both of us only had ten-dollar bills(纸币) and we needed the cashier to get the change for us. Other shoppers began digging into their pockets to find some change. It was amazing and touching as all these strangers seemed to react(反应) with the same mind. All wanted to be of help. Within minutes the cashier said, “I have too much money.” The cashier didn’t need our ten-dollar bills. Then the lady in front of me, who had been the first to offer help, said, “Wait! I didn’t even get a chance to give anything!”

I smiled at her and said, “You did your share, because it was your idea and you started all this. “ The little boy smiled and thanked us. We wished him the best and he left. I was left with a good feeling. I had seen the love and goodness of others all around me. The woman in front of me smiled and said, “It sure feels good to give, doesn’t it?” I smiled back

and said, “Yes !”
